From NEXTAEC to ENDURE: A Breakthrough in Alkaline Electrolysis with Bi-Layer Foam Electrodes

The EU H2020 NEXTAEC projet - Materials for Next Generation Alkaline Electrolysers, Grant no. 862509 - ended about six months ago. Just like in the present ENDURE project, UCLouvain was involved in the consortium as an academic partner, focusing on the development of new electrode designs.

NEXTAEC was the cradle for the concept of laterally-graded, bi-layer foam electrodes for alkaline electrolysis. These electrodes combine high activity and efficient bubble removal in a unique way, so unique that we are proud to announce that we made it to Nature Communications!

These bi-layer foam electrodes were the basis for the new concepts of porous transport electrodes currently developed within the ENDURE project. Such a strong synergy between successive EU projects is a sign of significant breakthrough.
